Brushing Proves Challenging for Many Kids

One-third of Americans say that the number of times their child brushes is “not enough,” according to the 2009 Delta Dental Children’s Oral Health Survey. Many children brush their teeth less than twice a day, or brush for a minute or less.

How can you ensure that your children brush regularly and receive the full benefits of brushing?

  • Start early. Even before your infant’s teeth come in, wipe the gums gently with a soft, damp cloth or gauze after each feeding.

  • Help your child brush. Begin cleaning baby teeth as soon as they come in. When the teeth emerge, brush them with a small, soft-bristled toothbrush and water. Parents should help children brush until they are 7 or 8 years old and can properly and thoroughly brush on their own.

  • Establish a twice-a-day brushing habit. Removal of plaque at least twice a day can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Brushing is most effective if done immediately after eating.

  • Select the right toothbrush. Find one that provides easy access to all areas of your child’s mouth. The brush should have soft nylon bristles with roundheads and a wide handle for a firm grip. Replace the toothbrush as soon as bristles show signs of wear, about once every three to four months.

  • Show kids the right way to brush. One easy technique involves placing the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the teeth and gently brushing in an elliptical motion. Brush the outside, inside, and biting surface of the teeth. When finished, brush the tongue, too.

  • Get a timer. Adequate brushing should take at least two minutes. An inexpensive kitchen timer can help teach kids to take their time brushing and do the job right.
